An itinerary through the churches that tell the story of eastern Sicily better than any museum: the white of Syracuse stone and the black of Etna lava, woven into façades that exist nowhere else.

  • Catania: the Cathedral of Saint Agatha and the churches of via Crociferi, heart of UNESCO baroque
  • Acireale: the Duomo square and the basilica of San Sebastiano, a lacework of white stone
  • Taormina: the fortress-cathedral of San Nicolò and the Madonna della Rocca sanctuary, carved into the cliff
  • Randazzo: the basilica of Santa Maria, built entirely of black lava stone

You set the pace: a mass, a candle, or simply the cool silence of the naves. Entry is free in almost every church.

The churches, one by one

Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta — Randazzo
Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta — Randazzo

Built from the 13th century with the stone Randazzo stands on: black Etna lava, trimmed with white limestone. Its neo-Gothic bell tower is visible across the valley, and inside, basalt columns hold up vaults that have survived seven centuries of eruptions and earthquakes. This is the town closest to the summit craters — and its basilica seems built to remind you.

Sanctuary of the Black Madonna — Tindari
Sanctuary of the Black Madonna — Tindari

On a cliff high above the Tyrrhenian, where the Greek acropolis of Tyndaris once stood, the golden dome guards a dark cedar Madonna that came from the East over a thousand years ago. Beneath the inscription «Nigra sum sed formosa» — I am black but beautiful — pilgrims arrive from all over Sicily, and from the churchyard your gaze falls on the Marinello lagoons, a reserve the sea redraws every season. One of the island’s most moving views.
