The version you never forget: you climb from Piano Provenzana in the afternoon, as the light starts to warm, and the local operators' 4x4 takes you to the panoramic point at 3,000 metres with an authorised volcanological guide. An easy walk along the rim of the 2002 craters while the sun sinks into the sea of clouds and the volcano's shadow stretches to the coast: three hours worth a whole journey. You return to Piano Provenzana as darkness rises, and your driver brings you back to the hotel. Excursion ticket: operator's official price, €79 per person, paid on site.
